In this post, I share my ideas for neutral color bins that look beautiful in any space.

Neutral doesn't mean boring

You don’t need loud colors to make play time fun.

Based on my experience in clients’ playrooms, the fewer distractions kids have, the more time they spend playing with toys.

Here are my picks for containers that come in shades of white, beige, and tan.

Bins for cube organizers

Let’s start with the most popular option for playrooms: 11″ – 13″ square bins that are designed for cube organizers.

Note: Product sizing is based on IKEA’s Kallax organizer, which has 13″ x 13″ cubbies that are 15″ deep.

Fabric bins

The following bins come in a variety of colors and include handles, which helps them maintain their shape over time.

I find that color blocks and textures on fabric bins are easier to coordinate than stripes or patterns.

Plastic bins

These plastic bins have handles for easy access and are in the $10.00 – $15.00 price range.

The Container Store’s milk crate has the best durability, followed by Target’s Brightroom bin.

Target’s Y-weave has the largest capacity, due to its shape, but is the weakest of the three least sturdy option.

Note: I always recommend white for plastic bins, because specialty colors tend to become discontinued as trends change.

Wood and woven bins

For a Pinterest worthy aesthetic, try bins made from wood or other natural materials.

These types bins can be the most costly and difficult to clean, so I’d advise against using them to store paint, slime, and other messy items.

If you’re looking for darker tones, here are some ideas in: wickerwood, and water hyacinth.

Baskets for larger toys

Next, let’s look at baskets for storing items on the ground.

I prefer coiled rope as the material for toy baskets, because there are no sharp edges and you can over stuff them a bit.

Tall baskets

These hampers are 20″ – 24″ tall, which makes them great for longer toys, such as guitars, swords, or the tracks for Matchbox cars.

I like hampers in playrooms, because they are easy to source and you can repurpose them in a laundry room or bedroom in the future.

Wide baskets

The following baskets are 16″ – 21″ wide and would work well for stuffed animals, sports balls, or bulky trucks.

I recommend solid colors for wide baskets, because they are large and can easily draw attention away from the rest of your space.

I’ll note that Amazon has the largest capacity for half the price of The Container Store, while Target has the smallest capacity.

Containers for small toys

Here are some collections of products that offer a variety of shapes and sizes in white or neutral tones.

mDesign

mDesign (also known as iDesign in stores) has an expansive line of bamboo products.

Their items tend to be marketed for luxury kitchens but I find that the smaller bins work just as well in playrooms.

You can find select iDesign products at The Container Store, on Amazon, and their online store. I recommend shopping the full catalog, which has sales and coupons, here

Tip: for even better prices on iDesign, buy bulk quantities on Amazon or shop in-store at Homegoods, Marshalls, or TJMaxx.

The Container Store

Despite the lackluster name “Plastic storage bin with handle,” this collection is the most versatile and cost effective storage solution from The Container Store.

I like that you can buy these bins as singles or in cases of 12, they have a simple look, and (at the time of this post) the largest bin is under $8.00.

The Chancellor bins are also worth looking at.

These bins are stackable, and the clever sizing makes it easy to create visually pleasing storage solutions.

The largest bin is just under $16.00

Target

My pick from Target is the Brightroom “Stacking Bin with Lid.”

(Who comes up with these names?)

These bins are good for long, skinny items. I like that they come with a lid, so you have the option to stack if needed.

The largest bin is $16.00

Tip: do not overload this type of bin; when the base is warped, the lid no longer fits securely.

Tips for a visually pleasing playroom

With so many choices for containers, putting together a playspace can be overwhelming.

Here are some tips for choosing products that “play nicely” together:

  • Pick one type of accent color or material first, and then build around it
  • Use the brand’s Amazon store link to discover coordinating containers

  • Know where a bin is going and what it will contain before buying it

  • Shop from a product collection to get the exact count and size you need
